Tarpon Rodeo

Originally dubbed the Tarpon Rodeo, a 3-day off-shore fishing adventure, started with a shotgun start with the hopeful catch of a winning Tarpon. Each year the winner’s name would be added to a perpetual Trophy. The tournament took place every year except during WWII.

Port Aransas originally named Tarpon, Texas was known for the plentiful Tarpon

Signed Tarpon scale with Franklin Roosevelts Signature  numbers. It was tradition to remove one of the largest Tarpon scale on your catch, sign your name and with the date it was caught and add it to the collection of scales at the Tarpon Inn. The Tarpon Inn is still in operation in Port Aransas. You can see the vast collection of Tarpon

Roosevelts Fine Dinning

You can find Franklin Roosevelts signed Tarpon Scale there and even grab dinner at the name sake restaurant, Roosevelts.

Further Off-Shore

Local Tarpon numbers dwindled with environmental changes and the dawn of boats that could go further pushed sport fisherman to find bigger fish to catch like blue marlin and tuna.

Eligible fish in the Offshore Division are as follows: Barracuda, Blue Marlin, Bonito (Little Tunny), Ling (Cobia), Dolphin (Dorado or Mahi), Jackfish (Jack Crevalle), Kingfish (King Mackerel), Sailfish, Spanish Mackerel, Blacktip/Spinner Shark, Blackfin Tuna, Yellowfin Tuna, Tarpon, White Marlin, and Wahoo.
