Explore Coastal Marine Life
The Patton Center features eight large saltwater aquariums showcasing many of the fish, invertebrates, and marine species found in the waters surrounding Port Aransas. Interactive exhibits throughout the center help visitors discover how local ecosystems work while highlighting the important research being conducted by UTMSI and the Mission-Aransas National Estuarine Research Reserve.
Be sure to visit the Estuary Explorium, where kids and adults alike can enjoy engaging, hands-on displays designed to make learning about Texas coastal habitats both fun and memorable.

After exploring indoors, step outside to enjoy several educational walking trails surrounding the center, including:

These peaceful trails feature native coastal plants that provide food and shelter for local birds, butterflies, and other wildlife, making them perfect for nature lovers and photographers.
A Story of Resilience
The Patton Center suffered extensive damage during Hurricane Harvey in 2017. Thanks to support from The University of Texas at Austin, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and generous donors Bobby and Sherri Patton, the facility was beautifully restored and transformed into the modern educational center visitors enjoy today.

R/V Katy Research Vessel
Groups may also reserve the R/V Katy, a 57-foot research vessel that provides students with an unforgettable hands-on marine science experience.

- Half-day educational programs available by reservation
Pier Lab
For groups wanting additional hands-on learning, the 1,200-square-foot Pier Lab offers running seawater systems and aquaria for marine science activities. Advance reservations are required.
