But before you hit the road, it’s essential to familiarize yourself with the rules and regulations for camping and RV camping on the beaches of Port Aransas. Here is everything you need to know for a safe, enjoyable, and memorable beach camping experience:
- Permits and Fees: Be sure to grab your $12 Beach Parking Pass from any local gas station, the local IGA Grocery Store or City Hall. It is required for any vehicle that will drive on the beach i.e. truck, car, golf cart ($500 ticket for anyone without the permit). This permit is good all year long for all Texas Beaches.

Beach Rules and Campsite Restrictions:
- Beach is considered a city street and all traffic laws apply.
- Beach camping is allowed for 3 days at a time every 3 weeks.
- Vehicle must be parked 50ft from water/25 ft from driving lane.
- Fires are allowed but cannot exceed 3 feet x 3 feet in diameter and must be at least 35 feet from the dunes

- Where to campΒ Port Aransas allows camping anywhere down the length of the beach and has 15 miles of beach to choose from. That’s a lot of beach! The beach area nearest to town has wooden bollards preventing close driving access to the water. This offers a great protective area for your tent and for kids to play. The bollards end near Access Rd 1A opening access for those seeking to park closer to the water. Always be mindful of the tide. There are lots of bathrooms, trash receptacles and indoor and outdoor shower opportunities all along the beach.
- Leave No Trace: One of the golden rules of beach camping is to leave no trace. Free
yellow beach trash bags can be found near every beach entrance inside a blue wooden stand. Pack out all trash and belongings, and leave your campsite cleaner than you found it. Respect the natural beauty of the coastline and minimize your impact on the environment to preserve it for future generations to enjoy.
- Safety Precautions: When camping on the beach, it’s crucial to be aware of potential safety hazards such as tides, currents, and inclement weather. Familiarize yourself with local weather forecasts and tide schedules, and always exercise caution when swimming or engaging in water activities. Additionally, be mindful of wildlife such as nesting shorebirds and sea turtles, and observe any posted guidelines for their protection. Also we do have rattlesnake and coyotes. Tent Camping on the Beach
Beach camping is a unique and exhilarating experience, and requires careful planning and packing to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable trip. Here are some essential items to bring along for your beach camping adventure:Β
-
- Tent: A sturdy tent or shelter is essential for providing protection from the elements, including sun, wind, rain and sand.Β Choose a tent with proper ventilation to keep you cool during hot days and ensure it’s securely anchored to withstand coastal breezes. Be sure brush your feet off our keep a small tub of water near the entrance of the tent to rinse your feet before going in. I promise you you want to do your best to keep the sand out of your tent. Be mindful of the wind blowing sand into your tent too through unzipped windows. I have woken up many times from getting “sandblasted” inside the tent.
- Sleeping Gear: Don’t forget your sleeping essentials, including sleeping bags on cool winter nights and just a sheet or two works fine in the summer. Sleeping pads are a life saver too as the sand will get hard packed and dont forget your pillows.
- Sun Protection:Β Sun protection is crucial when camping on the beach to shield yourself from harmful UV rays.Β Sunscreen, sunglasses, wide-brimmed hats, and light
weight long-sleeve surf and fishing shirts are essential to prevent sunburns. Β I prefer the Sun Sails over pop-up canopy’s. The pop-up canopy’s cant handle the wind and get jammed up with sand. People are always ditching their broken canopy’s, we call them beach spiders. Sun Sails are muuuuuch better and made for the beach and pack up easy.
- Water and Hydration: Stay hydrated throughout your beach camping trip by bringing plenty of water.
- Food and Cooking Supplies: Bring along a portable camping stove or grill or already made meals and snacks for your beach camping adventure. Burgers and dogs are always easy. I like to make premade tacos or wraps and individually wrap them for easy access. Don’t forget essential cooking supplies such as pots, pans, utensils, and food storage containers, as well as ingredients for campfire favorites like s’mores. We also have lots of restaurants in Port Aransas to keep you satisfied check out our restaurant guide.Β
- Beach Gear: Make the most of your beach camping experience by bringing along essential beach gear such as beach towels, beach chairs or loungers, umbrellas or shade shelters, fishing gear and beach toys or games for entertainment.
- First Aid Kit: Be prepared for minor injuries or medical emergencies by packing a well-stocked first aid kit. Include essentials such as adhesive bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, insect repellent, and any necessary prescription medications.
- Lighting: Ensure visibility at night with reliable lighting options such as lanterns, headlamps, or flashlights. Choose waterproof and durable lighting solutions that will withstand beach camping conditions and provide adequate illumination for navigating your campsite after dark. I like to bring glow sticks for the kids so I can see them at night.
How to RV Camp in Port Aransas:
- Choose Your Campsite: Rvs are permitted anywhere on the beach for campingΒ directly on the sand. You have a long stretch of beach to choose from. New rule is you can NOT park parallel to the beach. You MUST back in to park.
- Prepare Your RV: Before hitting the beach, ensure that your RV is equipped for beach camping conditions. Check tire pressure, bring along a shovel or traction mats for getting unstuck in soft sand, and stock up on essentials such as fresh water, food, and sunscreen. Consider investing in beach-friendly camping gear such as sand anchors for awnings and outdoor furniture.
- Set Up Camp Responsibly: Always park above high tide line.Β The beach in Port Aransas is well maintained and is mostly hard packed flat sand but its always a good idea to place something flat under tires & stabilizers or deflate the tires some for more surface area.Β Level your RV on firm ground, anchor it securely, and avoid driving or parking in protected dune areas. Be mindful of other campers and maintain a respectful distance from neighboring campsites to ensure everyone’s privacy and enjoyment.
- Enjoy the Experience: Now that you’re settled in, it’s time to relax and enjoy all that beach camping in Port Aransas has to offer. Spend your days lounging in the sun, swimming in the surf, and exploring the natural beauty of the coastline. Cook up delicious meals over a campfire, gather with friends and family for sunset beach walks, and fall asleep to the soothing sound of the waves crashing nearby.
- Water and Dump Stations: IB Magee County Park is the only public water and dump station available within Port Aransas. It is located at off of Beach St. Last I heard it was $4 for water and $10 to dump. This is a great site for water and dump stations info.Β
