Harvest Moon Regatta: A Port Aransas Tradition Worth Watching
If you happen to be in Port Aransas in late October, there is one sight you don’t want to miss: a fleet of sailboats coming in from the Gulf after an overnight race from Galveston.
The Harvest Moon Regatta is one of the Texas coast’s great sailing traditions. Since 1987, sailors have made the offshore journey from the Galveston area to Port Aransas, turning the arrival of the fleet into a celebration on the island.
And while you don’t have to be a sailor to enjoy it, we highly recommend watching the boats come in.
⛵ What Is the Harvest Moon Regatta?

The Harvest Moon Regatta is an offshore sailboat race from Galveston to Port Aransas. The race takes the boats out into the Gulf for an overnight passage before they make their way toward the Port Aransas ship channel.
The 2026 race begins with the first start on Thursday, October 22 at 2 PM. Once the boats are underway, spectators can follow the fleet using the official race tracking system.
There are several ways to participate in the event. Experienced racers can compete in the Standard Race, sailors looking for the offshore experience without competitive scoring can enter the Rally Class, and the Cruiser Party Class offers a way to join the Port Aransas festivities without being part of the official race.
🌊 Our Favorite Part: Watching the Boats Arrive
For us, the real fun happens Friday morning when the sailboats start making their way into Port Aransas.
We usually spend the morning around the Port Aransas City Marina or out at the jetties, watching for the boats as they come through.
There is something pretty special about standing along the water and watching these sailboats appear after spending the night offshore. You’ll see boats of all different sizes, crews working together, sails catching the wind, and spectators cheering them on as they finish their journey.
It’s one of those Port A experiences that doesn’t require a ticket or a reservation. Just find a good spot, grab a coffee, and watch the action.
📍 Where to Watch
Port Aransas City Marina is a great place to be close to the action as boats arrive and the post-race festivities get underway.
The jetties at Roberts Point Park are another favorite spot for getting a different view of the boats coming toward the channel.
Bring:
☕ Coffee or breakfast
🪑 A comfortable chair
🧢 A hat and sunscreen
📱 Your phone for tracking the boats
🔭 Binoculars if you have them
And don’t forget that it can be windy out there!
📱 Track the Boats From Anywhere
You don’t have to guess when the fleet is getting close.
The Harvest Moon Regatta uses Yellowbrick tracking, allowing spectators to follow the boats during the race. The official event recommends the YB Races mobile app, and tracking can also be viewed online.
This is especially handy if you’re planning to head down to the marina or jetties. Check the tracking before you leave so you have a better idea of when the fleet is approaching.
Pro tip: Follow the boats from your phone while you’re waiting at the marina. It makes watching them appear on the horizon even more fun!
🏴☠️ And Then Port A Comes Alive
Once the boats arrive, the race turns into a Port Aransas celebration.
The 2026 Harvest Moon Regatta includes the Mt. Gay Rum Party and Jerry Diaz and Hannah’s Reef Band on Saturday, October 24 from 4–7 PM, followed by the awards ceremony at 7 PM. The event will also feature food trucks during the festivities.
It’s a great example of what makes Port Aransas such a fun destination for events like this. The race brings people here by boat, and then everyone gets to enjoy the island once they arrive.
🚤 You Don’t Have to Be a Racer
One of the best things about the Harvest Moon Regatta is that there really is something for different kinds of sailors.
The Standard Race is for crews competing for official results and awards.
The Rally Class allows sailors to experience the offshore passage with the fleet without being competitively scored.
And the Cruiser Party Class is for boaters who want to make their own way to Port Aransas and enjoy the celebration. Cruiser Party boats aren’t part of the official race but receive guaranteed dockage at the City Marina for the festivities.
So whether you’re an experienced racer, a cruising sailor, or simply someone who loves boats and a good Port A party, you can find a way to be part of the Harvest Moon weekend.

For us, it’s as simple as spending a morning at the marina or jetties, watching the boats come in and soaking up the excitement as Port Aransas welcomes the fleet.
